Did you know that Robertson Quay + UE Square + Mohammad Sultan is now Singapore's unofficial Little Japan? It's a short walk away from Liang Court but yet far enough from the touristy crowds that throng Clarke Quay and Riverside Point.

Less than a year ago, there was just Shunjuu, now the whole stretch has about seven different Japanese restaurants from Yoyogi which serves sashimi to Gyu-kaku, a Japanese bbq place that serves wagyu beef (has another outlet at Chjimes).

And I've spotted the next place to try: Rivercafe. It's an Australian restaurant that shares the same space as the Singapore Tyler Print Institute and can accommodate about 300 guests for a cocktail party. Very stylish, very posh but also very affordable. Main courses start from $21.

    <lj:music>Too Young - Phoenix</lj:music>

Tan Tarn How, my former sup, reminds us once again of the rationale behind the Govt's policy on the media:

1) Concentrate the attack on centres of power and influence.
2) Guard the mainstream, but tolerate the fringe.
3) Politics must be treated seriously, and politicians must be respected like one respects one’s uncle (this was how it has been put before by the government itself).

Those few points have been taken off his blog.

Personally, item 3 troubles me the most. Tarn How says that "Satire uses the tactic of laughter to further its strategy of contempt. Cynicism is the black ice on which all attempts at serious discussion slip and fall." So how do you draw the line between satire and cynicism? Mr Brown was lauded for bak chor mee which was satirical but now suspended because of his cynical columns. Doesn't every satire start off with cynicism?

Bottomline is, if you want to blog about politics, go under the radar. Be a Parker Posey. I wouldn't be surprised if one day, Cherian George or Tan Tarn How get called up for tea when the number of hits on their blogs reach a daily viewership of 50,000. Also, another word of caution, don't get quoted in the mainstream media too often. Watch out Cenite.

Speaking of censorship, is STOMP really citizen journalism, as claimed by ST? Well if citizen journalism to you is about the community tipping the mainstream media off about fires, abused kittens, or graffiti (gasp!) on the walls of the CTE exit at Clemenceau Road, then alright, STOMP has served its purpose.

But come on, how can you speak of citizen journalism when the content is decided by the local editors? That said, will we ever have a stand-alone site for citizen journalism where the community can publish local news articles?

Methinks a certain generation has to die out first.
